Season Summary
Production
Season 1 was announced by FOX in early 2001 as a direct competitor to CBS's Survivor. Created by Joel Rosenman, the show was adapted from existing reality competition formats. Joan Calloway, a former sports broadcaster, was hired as host. The season was filmed in Panama — the show's first and only visit to Central America — with contestants stranded for 39 days across two tribes.
Pre-merge (Episodes 1–8)
Tairona dominated early challenges, winning the first two Immunity Challenges. Caimán struggled with leadership disputes and internal conflict. Chloe Kim became the first castaway voted out in Episode 1 due to lack of outdoor experience. Naomi Tate followed in Episode 2 as Caimán continued to lose.
Tairona lost their first Immunity Challenge in Episode 3 ("BasketBros"), sending Garrett Shaw home. Leo Crane was voted out in Episode 4 after being perceived as the least socially connected member of his tribe. Selena Delgado was eliminated in Episode 5 ("Peaches") following a feud over stolen fruit that fractured Tairona's trust. Bridget O'Malley went home in Episode 6 after being labeled lazy by her tribemates. Hector Fuentes was voted out in Episode 7 despite the formation of the "MM Alliance" between Marcus Webb and Martin Cross earlier that same episode. Vincent Reese was blindsided in Episode 8 after a sudden loyalty shift sent him home.
Merge (Episode 9)
The tribes merged with eight contestants remaining, forming the new tribe Apex. Keisha Monroe won the first Individual Immunity Challenge in franchise history. Tanya Vasquez became the first jury member.
Post-merge (Episodes 10–11)
Episode 10 ("Major Holes") featured a double elimination — Martin Cross won Individual Immunity, and both Ronan Fletcher and Jessica Whitmore were voted out the same night. Priya Chandrasekhar was eliminated in Episode 11 after Marcus Webb won Individual Immunity and targeted her as a strategic threat.
Finale (Episodes 12–13)
Marcus Webb won the final Immunity Challenge and chose to bring Martin Cross to the Final Tribal Council, eliminating Keisha Monroe (4th) and Derek Holloway (3rd) in the process. At Final Tribal Council, Marcus highlighted his physical dominance and challenge wins while Marty emphasized his social maneuvering and the MM Alliance. The jury voted 5–2 in favor of Marty Cross, crowning him the first Apex.

The "MM Alliance" between Marty and Marcus became a fan-favorite storyline, and the double elimination episode "Major Holes" was cited as a season highlight.
Some critics noted the show's similarities to Survivor, but many agreed that The Apex carved out its own identity through Calloway's hosting style and its focus on "apex predator" gameplay.
